With a wine glass filled with tap water in hand I had positioned myself in the furthest corner of the canteen. It was the yearly new year's celebration at my work and all my colleagues seemed to be having the time of their lives. As I looked at the scene I felt like a complete alien. I was different, and I knew it. Pretending I wasn't was becoming harder every day. In my younger years I was not aware of the power of being different yet. I was brought up to fit in. If only I'd known then what I know now. Being different happens to be my biggest strength, and after wholeheartedly embracing it it eventually let me to my dream job as a healer.
In a world that favors conformity, we often forget that being different should be a super power. Our individuality and unique traits make us who we are, and that should be a cause for celebration. But why is being different so powerful? And why is it so empowering to fully own it?
5 reasons why being different is a Super Power
Creativity and innovation: Being different helps develop creativity. Those who are other than the norm have different view points and perspectives. This often makes them the ones who come up with innovative ideas. By being different we can help find solutions to problems, by bringing our unique spin to them and offering a different perspective.
Diversity: Diversity colors life. Take nature for example. All those different variaties of trees, plants, flowers, insects, animals. They all add their unique contribution to the whole, creating vibrant and thriving eco systems. Different cultures, backgrounds, talents and ways of experiencing life can do the same for a society. As a woman of color in a predominantly white society I should know. It is the diversity in humans and the uniqueness they carry that makes for a more interesting world.
Self expression: Being different gives us the freedom to express ourselves. I've lost count of clients who I see in my healing practice who have an unbalanced throat chakra. This is our chakra for self expression and authenticity. Especially in the Netherlands where for centuries the thinking was: "Normal is good enough.". But "normal" is just one point of view, since your normal may not be mine. When my clients fully embrace their differentness they create space to pursue their true passions and put their unique stamp on the world. This leads to deeper personal growth and inner fulfillment.
Inspiration: This could easily be my favorite aspect about being different. Being authentically yourself inspires others. When we live authentically we indirectly, give permission to those who may not be brave enough to do so yet. This creates a domino effect where we pass on self empowerment and self acceptance, as those around us see us shine as our unique, authentic selves.
Strength in difference: In stead of trying to be the square peg in someone else's round hole, we can discover and grow our own super powers. These talents are specific to each of us and lead us to our unique roads to succes and fulfillment. Find the power in being different and stand in your truth. This will bring you peace, authenticity and, in general, just a happier life.

When being different is being yourself!
Wow, just writing that sentence down feels so good! Like a relief. That is exactly what I see happening when my clients simply give themselves permission to be who they truly are.
Being different in the Tarot
Make being different your biggest strength with the High Priest Archetype
I jokingly refer to this 6th Major Arcana card as the " F you" card. Because from his pose you can clearly see that he is not interested in how others perceive him or the choices he makes in life. He knows who he is and fully embraces that. His Soul Super Powers are, among many, self confidence, being a pioneer and visionary, innovation and creativity.
The High Priest often also follows an alternative Spiritual path, and is a trailblazer in it. He trusts his intuition to guide him to the belief system that fits him and his uncompromising life path.
If this is your Soul Super Power Archetype you are free to fully be yourself and inspire everyone around you to do the same.
Of course, like any other archetype, the High Priest also has a shadow side. One that can isolate him and make him unapproachable.
